Think castles, moats, gothic cathedrals, Vikings, medieval streets and churches and you've got a pretty good picture of what attracts people to York. This is one dramatic backdrop for a Hen weekend.
One of the best vantage points for the city is from the ramparts of its medieval city walls which is a popular walk - although you'll have to doge the odd American tourist. There also a number of ghost walks in the evenings if you want to discover York's darker side.
While there's plenty of fascinating history here, you don't need to fill your weekend with lots of boring history lessons. There's a huge number of truly historic pubs which is how we like to discover what really makes a place tick. There's also a great range of daytime pursuits to choose from including clay pigeon shooting, quad biking and, more appropriately, archery. Alternatively, take a leisurely cruise down the River Ouse and see the city from another angle.
